Blue Mountain Shootout
BMSO Page 2

The Blue Mountain Shootout # 9 was held July 11-13 this was our 9th year to host a three day Cowboy Shoot. We had 124 registered shooters and eight shooting classes. Awards were presented to the top five shooters in each class. All Junior shooters were presented awards.

By noon on Friday, most of the vendors were open for business and the range opened for side matches. Some of the events were the pocket pistol match, speed rifle, speed pistol, Cowboy skeet, big bore rifle and bag bologna. You could enter an individual match or pay $10.00 to shoot any or all of the side matches as many times as you wanted. Side matches closed at 5 P.M.

On Saturday, well before the 8:30 A.M. shooters meeting, the sutlers area was full of shoppers. By 9 A.M. the shooters began to send lead down the range. We shot five stages on Satuday and another five on Sunday. Rusty Pipes designed and set up all the stages, and Blackhawk Bisley wrote the scenarios.

Stage 1 Life On The Plains"

You are setting in the General Store wondering what to have for dinner. Someone points out a flock of prairie chickens wandering by the window. You grab your rifle to bring down a chicken dinner. Suddenly the flock is scattered by a bunch of buffalo stampeding by. In order to get your chicken dinner, you start shooting the buffalo and the chickens before thay are scattered over the countryside. Unfortunately, you don't see the Indian hunting party that is running the buffalo. They aren't real happy that you ruined their hunt and decide to burn the general store down around your ears. You draw your hoglegs to fight them off. By the time you have settled with the Indians, the Vultures are gathering to make off with the dead chickens. Still trying to get a chicken dinner, you grab your shotgun and drive off the vultures.

Stage 2 Rusty's Razor

After a long trail drive, all you want is a bath, shave, and a cold drink with a good looking woman. Figuring the women will be easier to get close to after the bath and shave, you head to the local barber shop. Unfortunately, Rusty, the barber tells you that a bunch of owlhoots have taken over his shop and are playing cards and scaring away the paying customers. You decide the only way to get that bath and shave is to clean out the gang of malcontents yourself.

Stage 3 Chores

Blacksmith Mart, a recluse mountain man, is out in the yard drawing the water for his annual bath. One of the reasons hes a recluse is the fact that its past time for the bath. Regardless, Marty has grown to like the silence and solitude of his homestead in the mountains. You can imagine his displeasure when he looks up to find his front yard over-run with noisy varmints of all kinds. Determined to bring back the peaceful stillness of his abode, Blacksmith grabs his guns and starts to restore the peace. After all, a dead varmint is a quiet varmint.

Stage 4 Magnificent 7 (Minus 6)

You know the story. Seven gunfighters have come back to town to free the farmers from the bandit gang. You have found that a good number of the bandits have gathered at the bar. Unfortunately, your partners are busy in other parts of the town. You have been worried lately that you have lost your nerve. You decide to see if you still have it by taking on the bandits by your self. If you are as good as you think you are. Surprise and skill will win you through. You know that there are to many bandits to take just with your handguns, so you decide to go in with guns blazing and carry on the fight with whatever weapons you pick up from your fallen foes.

Stage 5 Billy Baits Barnyard Bandits
Billy is out tending the livestock when he sees that his barnyard is being over-run with bandits and hostile Indians. The bandits are trying to steal the livestock and the Indians are trying to steal Billys scalp. ( Of course, they are going to scalp his beard since he doesnt have enough hair on top of his head to make it worthwhile). The Indian Medicine Man has even done a war dance, using a couple of live rattlesnakes, to reinforce his braves courage in going against the meanest, ugliest, baddest gunman in the whole West. Billy decides that its time to clean out the barnyard - using his guns instead of a pitchfork.
